Hidden Bay Escape
Lykkers, picture yourselves arriving at a peaceful bay where the sea glimmers in shades of blue and green, soft sand stretches beneath your feet, and every moment feels like an invitation to unwind and simply breathe.
Bahía San Agustín in Huatulco, Oaxaca, is exactly that place. Known as one of the nine bays of Huatulco, it’s less crowded but full of charm, making it perfect for a day trip or a quiet getaway. Let’s break down everything we need to know before we go.

Location and Entrance

Bahía San Agustín is about 10 km east of La Crucecita, the main town of Huatulco, and west of Santa Cruz Bay. There’s no entrance fee to the bay itself—it’s a public beach, which makes it budget-friendly compared to other tourist spots.

Opening Hours

The bay doesn’t have official opening or closing hours, since it’s a natural beach. However, most restaurants and service providers around the bay operate from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. For safety, it’s best to plan visits during daylight.

How to Get There

We have two main options:
- By road: From La Crucecita, we take Federal Highway 200, then follow signs near Santa María Huatulco. The drive is about 18 km and takes 30–40 minutes. Taxis charge around $15–20 USD one way. Shared shuttles are available for about $5–7 USD per person.
- By boat: From Santa Cruz Bay, boat tours cost about $20–30 USD per person, and we can choose to stop at either San Agustín Beach or Cacalutilla Beach. This is a great option if we want panoramic ocean views along the way.

Best Time to Visit

The bay is best visited from November to April, when the weather is dry, sunny, and temperatures range from 79°F to 84°F (26–29°C). The rainy season (June to September) brings more humidity, but it also makes the surroundings greener. To avoid crowds, weekdays are better than weekends, since locals often come for family trips on Saturdays and Sundays.

Things to Do

Bahía San Agustín is known for its wide range of activities:
- Snorkeling: One of the highlights here. Snorkel gear rentals are about $5–10 USD per set, and guided snorkeling tours start at $20 USD per person.
- Diving: For certified divers, trips cost around $60–80 USD, including gear and a local guide.
- Boat Tours: Half-day tours are about $25–30 USD, often including stops at coral reefs.
- Beach Sports: Volleyball and soccer are popular activities.
- Relaxation: Renting a beach chair or umbrella costs $3–5 USD for the day.

Food and Drinks

Local beach restaurants (palapas) line the shore, offering fresh seafood and Oaxacan specialties. Popular dishes include ceviche, shrimp dishes, and pescado a la talla. Expect to pay around $8–15 USD per meal, with fresh juices and sodas costing about $2–3 USD.

Accommodation Options

If we want to stay overnight:
- Rustic cabins near the bay: $40–60 USD per night, offering simple but cozy stays.
- Hotels in La Crucecita: Budget hotels start at $30 USD per night, mid-range at $70–100 USD, and luxury resorts can go beyond $200 USD per night.

Tips for Visiting

- Bring cash, as most restaurants and rentals don’t accept cards.
- Pack sunscreen, hats, and water shoes (the reef areas can be rocky).
- Arrive early if visiting on a weekend—parking spots can fill up fast.
- Snorkeling is best in the morning when waters are calmer and clearer.
- Respect wildlife: it’s common to spot iguanas, tropical fish, and even sea turtles.

Wildlife and Nature

The coral reef here is one of the most vibrant in Huatulco, home to parrotfish, angelfish, lobsters, and octopuses. On land, we may see iguanas, armadillos, and various bird species. The bay’s mix of desert plants (like cactus and aloe) with coastal greenery makes the scenery unique.

Bahía San Agustín is more than a beach—it’s a place where nature, relaxation, and adventure come together seamlessly. With free access, fresh local food, fun activities, and a peaceful vibe, it has something for everyone.
